Task force explores need for practical skills training

Christopher Edley quoted in California Bar Journal, June 2012

UC Berkeley School of Law Dean Christopher Edley Jr., whose colleague Marjorie Shultz is one of three academics on the task force, said the practical skills issue has been debated for at least the 30 years he’s been in academia. “It’s not a new concern but it’s arguably gotten worse because of changes in the law firm market with pressure on the way associates bill,” he said.

UC report calls for more tolerance of protests

Christopher Edley quoted in San Francisco Chronicle, May 5, 2012

“I’ve had conversations with my students who were struck by batons, who were stopped by police and pressed to produce identification and explain themselves,” said Christopher Edley, the UC Berkeley Law School dean who wrote the report with Charles Robinson, UC’s general counsel. “It makes them feel shaky. Those transactions have to be minimized.”

An Associated Press story on this topic has appeared in more than 100 sources nationwide. Others appeared in the Los Angeles Times and The Chronicle of Higher Education.

Five at UC awarded for distinguished teaching

Christopher Edley and David Sklansky quoted in Berkeley Patch, April 27, 2012

Berkeley Law Dean Chris Edley writes that Sklansky “communicates complex legal concepts to large classes of students and encourages their serious analysis of often politically and emotionally charged issues of criminal law, criminal procedure, and evidence.”

Sklansky says his challenge is to keep classroom learning fresh for his students, “but that challenge is a big part of why I find teaching so joyful, so rejuvenating, and so deeply rewarding.”

Judge orders most of UC Davis pepper-spray report to be public

Christopher Edley quoted in Los Angeles Times, L.A. NOW, March 28, 2012

Edley said his report does not investigate the UC Davis pepper-spray incident or the use of batons by UC Berkeley police on demonstrators the same month, although those controversies led to his study. Instead, he said his report is “forward looking” and will examine such issues as freedom of expression, police training, de-escalation techniques and develop recommendations for administrators, police and students.

Report: Minority Students Face Harsher Discipline

Christopher Edley interviewed on PBS Newshour, March 6, 2012

“You can’t be providing opportunity if kids are kicked out of the school. And there are alternatives to those disciplinary measures. There are alternatives in terms of interventions, in training teachers to do a better job of classroom management, and interventions to figure out what’s going wrong in that kid’s life.”

I do think we have several ideas that have emerged from these discussions that will make it better for the future, make it less likely that communities will feel this kind of pain.

Robinson and Edley said their report won’t be investigative like the others. Instead they are visiting campuses, listening to students and faculty, and trying to figure out what UC should do differently.

“American companies are investing in Israel, and a lot of Israeli companies are moving here. All those connections feed this industry and keep it alive.”

Christopher Edley, dean of Berkeley Law, said the conference is exciting “not only because we’re talking about an issue of vital importance to Israel, but because the lessons in Israel offer insights about Silicon Valley and its future. It’s one thing to sit on Wall Street and invent a new kind of derivative. It’s another thing to build the next generation of technology.”
