New Scholarships and Fellowships Available

SFLRLA & BALIF LGBT PUBLIC INTEREST LAW FELLOWSHIP

This fellowship, jointly awarded by San Francisco La Raza Lawyers Association (SFLRLA) and Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF), was established to fund summer employment for a law school student.

Priority is given to an applicant with at least one of the following objectives in her/his expected summer work:

(1) development/expansion of legal services for LGBT community, especially within the Latino community; (2) education of LGBT community about legal rights; and (3) mentoring to law students.

This scholarship, awarded by San Francisco La Raza Lawyers Association (SFLRLA), was established to finance a bar review course for a current third-year law student.

Priority is given to an applicant with at least one of the following objectives in their post-graduation employment:

(1) development/expansion of legal services specializing in housing, education, employment, discrimination, immigration, and naturalization; (2) education of Latino community about legal rights; and (3) mentoring to law students.

AAJ WOMEN FOR JUSTICE EDUCATION FUND’S MIKE EIDSON SCHOLARSHIP

The Mike Eidson Scholarship Fund was established by the AAJ Women for Justice Education Fund in 2008, in honor of AAJ Past President Mike Eidson whose vision and generosity inspired it.

The scholarship is awarded annually to a rising 3L female student with demonstrated commitment to a career in criminal defense advocacy and defending the principles of the Constitution. See website for more information.

FEDERAL COMMUNICATIONS BAR ASSOCIATION FOUNDATION LAW SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The Federal Communications Bar Association (FCBA) Foundation Law School Scholarship is awarded to law students in their second or third year.

This is both a merit and needs-based scholarship. Applicants must demonstrate strength of character, superior academic achievement, and a strong interest in pursuing a career in communications law.

New Scholarship Available for Jewish Students from LA County: JVS Scholarship Program

JEWISH VOCATIONAL SERVICE SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

The JVS Scholarship is available to Jewish students with verifiable financial need who are legal and permanent residents of Los Angeles County.

Primary criterion for scholarship selection is financial need. Jewish community involvement and community service are also considered. Financial need is verified by federal income tax returns.

A personal interview is necessary for eligible new applicants. All applicants are required to file a “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” (FAFSA) in January.

RHODE ISLAND BAR FOUNDATION – THOMAS F. BLACK, JR. MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP

The Thomas F. Black, Jr. Memorial Scholarship provides financial assistance to Rhode Island residents who show promise of becoming outstanding lawyers and need assistance to study at quality law schools.

Scholarship awards shall be exclusively for tuition and related expenses for full-time students in L.L.B. or J.D. degree programs offered by accredited law schools located in the United States or District of Columbia.

Each scholarship will be made on the basis of demonstrated financial need, superior academic performance, community and public service, and demonstrated contacts with and commitment to the State of Rhode Island.

ANIMAL LEGAL DEFENSE FUND (ALDF) ADVANCEMENT OF ANIMAL LAW SCHOLARSHIP

The ALDF Advancement of Animal Law Scholarship is available to law student members of Student Animal Legal Defense Fund (SALDF) chapters.

Applicants should demonstrate commitment to ALDF’s mission through chapter involvement and anticipated participation in a related field after graduation.

Scholarships are for one year only. However, students are eligible to apply for continued funding. Scholarships for 1Ls (and part-time students) are $2,500 and scholarships for 2Ls and 3Ls are $5,000.
