IABA’s Purpose
For decades the International Association of Berkeley Law Alumni in Europe (IABA) has dedicated itself to facilitating and maintaining contacts both among overseas alumni, as well as between alumni and Berkeley Law and its Faculty. Although its activity is primarily in Europe, it is open to all alumni and former visiting scholars. As a long-standing alumni organisation in Europe, IABA has undertaken to play an active role in Berkeley Law’s development of an international alumni network. In this respect it also welcomes contacts with Berkeley Law alumni and other alumni organisations.
History and Organisation
IABA has a long history: In 1967 European LLM alumni decided to found an international alumni association in Europe, named the International Association of Boalt Alumni. In 1968 the first annual general meeting was held in Strassbourg and IABA was formally constituted under French law. In 1984 it was subsequently incorporated as a non-profit society under Swiss law and is domiciled in Switzerland today. In 2019 IABA changed its name to International Association of Berkeley Law Alumni in Europe.
Annual Reunions
Since 1968, IABA holds an annual reunion with its general assembly in a different city each year. This meeting is an event with an academic part and a broad social program, at which members, alumni, spouses and accompanying persons are welcome.
The 2024 reunion was held in the historic town of St. Gall (St. Gallen in German) with its UNESCO world heritage site. Among other things, IABA members visted famous Abbey District with its baroque library and archives, containing amongst its many treasures the famous monastery plan of 820.

IABA will be holding its next annual reunion in the Austrian capital of Vienna in 2025. The city has a wonderful cultural heritage as the former centre of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, encompassing many peoples of Central and Eastern Europe. Meet old friends and make new ones in one of Europe’s most charming cities! Our host, Hiltrud Zehrl (LLM `91), will show us some of its secret spots and hidden treasures, which are not commonly accessible to visitors. Do not miss this great opportunity. Vienna State Opera – “Rosenkavalier”
For persons arriving a day earlier, we will try to make a group booking for 10-12 persons on June12th for the “Rosenkavalier” opera with a stellar cast in the Vienna State Opera. Price of the ticket is ca. € 154 in the stalls. Please indicate to Hiltrud Zehrl (Zehrl@gmx.at) by November 15, 2024, if you are interested (first come first served basis; reservations are definite).
