Immigrant advocates blast Brown vetoes in Calif.

Aarti Kohli quoted in Associated Press, October 2, 2012

“It is disappointing that Jerry Brown doesn’t want to be the anti-Jan Brewer,” said Aarti Kohli, senior fellow at the Warren Institute on Law and Social Policy at University of California, Berkeley School of Law. “The advocates feel very betrayed. They feel like the immigrant and particularly the Latino community have been behind the governor … and that he hasn’t really shown a deep understanding of these really serious issues.”

More debate questions we’d ask

Jennifer Granholm writes for POLITICO, October 1, 2012

Inspired by my Current TV colleague Eliot Spitzer’s four debate questions in a column for Slate, here are 10 additional questions for both candidates…Bonus questions for Romney: 1) If you had $50 to last for an entire week, which would you buy: a) groceries; b) gasoline so you could get to work; c) prescriptions for your child’s illness?

UC Online strives to compete in an era of free courses

Christopher Edley quoted in The Chronicle of Higher Education, October 1, 2012

The “terrible shape” of the economy combined with potential donors’ perceptions of the UC system made securing the money difficult, Mr. Edley said in an interview. “Many donors felt that with the size of the UC, we should be able to finance these investments internally,” he said. “They apparently weren’t sensitive to the serious effects of state budget cuts.”

‘Pivots’ key to Romney, Obama debate

Jennifer Granholm quoted in San Francisco Chronicle, October 15, 2012

“That pivot point and how long it takes before you get to that pivot is absolutely critical,” said former Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm, host of Current TV’s “The War Room” and a visiting professor at UC Berkeley who helped Vice President Joe Biden prepare for his 2008 debate with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. “If you don’t answer any of those incoming Scuds, then those are charges that are left unanswered. And that was part of the problem the president had” in the first debate with GOP nominee Mitt Romney, Granholm said.

Brewster Kahle’s Internet archive

Pamela Samuelson quoted in San Francisco Chronicle, October 15, 2012

“He has almost evangelistic zeal for promoting better access to information to take advantage of the opportunities that are out there,” said Pamela Samuelson, a professor at UC Berkeley School of Law. Samuelson, a renowned pioneer in digital copyright law, met Kahle about 20 years ago. “If anything, he’s become more of a visionary and more of an evangelist,” she said. “He hasn’t slowed down at all.”

UC Berkeley law professor Jesse Choper receives award from state bar

Jesse Choper and John Yoo quoted in The Daily Californian, October 14, 2012

Choper said he feels humbled by the recognition. “I am very pleased to have received it,” he said. “I have studied the names who have received it in the past, and they all have very distinguished careers. I feel privileged and honored to join them.”

John Yoo, a professor at UC Berkeley’s law school, called Choper a “long-time servant” of the law school and the campus whose work studying judicial review and the rights of religious minorities has had a considerable impact on the legal community. “It is fair to say that in both fields, Choper has published leading works that have moved his field forward and influenced generations of scholars,” Yoo said in an email.

California greenhouse gas rules face major court test

Daniel Farber quoted in San Jose Mercury News, October 14, 2012

“Any comprehensive plan is going to have to confront this issue,” said Daniel Farber, co-director of UC Berkeley’s environmental law [center]. “A negative decision in this case could pose a barrier to aggressive state efforts to address climate change.”

Obama has pursued a dangerous change in the powers of the president

John Yoo writes for Foxnews.com, October 12, 2012

Although the Constitution is silent on border control and immigration, the Supreme Court declared long ago that these authorities reside with Congress. Congress has passed an extensive Immigration and Naturalization Act, which specifies the limited cases where the executive branch can suspend the removal of illegal aliens. The act does not give the president the authority to interrupt the deportation of whole classes of illegal aliens, and certainly nothing approaching one million.

Debate preparation like boot camp

Jennifer Granholm quoted in San Francisco Chronicle, October 10, 2012

“I think the challenge is going to be not to appear too wonky,” Granholm said. “Both he and Paul Ryan have that challenge. “For Biden, because he is so loquacious, the challenge for him in this debate is how to deliver a message in the format. That was a tough thing for him before,” Granholm said.

Government, industry leaders convene to explore financing of large-scale energy efficiency real estate improvements

Ken Taymor quoted in Yahoo! Finance, October 9, 2012

“California needs to find ways to achieve wide-scale improvement in the energy footprint of commercial and multifamily residential real estate,” said Ken Taymor…. “Building connections between the government, real estate, technology and finance industries—and intertwining the expertise and unique perspectives of each—is the first step in eliminating costly waste and employing efficient, long-lasting energy solutions.”
