WHAT DO YOU TEACH? | |
I teach several courses in the Ph.D. program (J.D. students can take these courses too!), including Sociology of Law, Social Movements and Law, Research Design, and Gender, Law & Society. I teach Employment Discrimination in the J.D. program. I also teach undergraduate Sociology of Law and Women and the Law.
WHAT IS YOUR AREA OF RESEARCH OR WRITING?
My work focuses on the relationship between law and social change, and it is primarily empirical research based on original data. I have two major strands of research right now. One examines public interest law and the legal profession, including a study of a representative sample of more than 200 public interest law organizations in the United States, and a six school comparative study of public interest career choices among a decade of California law graduates. The second strand of research examines inequality in employment, including whether law can mitigate bias against mothers and family leave takers in the workplace, whether wage and future employment penalties for being fired vary with race, and a large scale study on whether race and gender bias operates in the hiring process for STEM faculty in major research universities. I’m also interested in how obscure procedural rules (e.g., which opinions must be officially published, what is the standard for prevailing party for the purposes of fee shifting in civil rights actions) affect civil rights enforcement and the development of civil rights law.

SOMETHING YOU DON’T KNOW ABOUT ME:
Based on my internet searches, google thinks I’m a 34 year old man interested in law, statistics, baseball, and computational text analysis. All that is true except for the 34 year old man part.

Kyle went above and beyond duty before and during Orientation Week. He remained totally unflappable, despite being his first orientation without Izzy. I loved working with him for the past month, and he deserves a HUGE Shout Out for the great work he did!!

Review: Henry’s Bar and Restaurant at the Graduate
The former Durant Hotel has been revamped into the Graduate Hotel (see this article in Forbes for background) and now features Henry’s Bar and Restaurant. On the corner of Durant and Bowditch, this will likely become a popular happy hour or after-work gathering spot for people on our side of campus. While it’s not cheap (appetizers range from $5 – $18), it isn’t out of synch with other Berkeley and Oakland restaurants. Its menu has variety and seasonal offerings, and the atmosphere is casual and friendly. Some of us in the development office have tried it on separate occasions and the reviews are uniformly positive.
Looking for Budget-friendly Fun in Berkeley?
Looking for budget-friendly fun in Berkeley? Make sure you check out this recent article in the New York Times:
The article not only describes several great eateries and other sources of entertainment throughout the city of Berkeley, but also mentions the nearby Faculty Club – saying : “What may have been the most fun dining deal, though, came at the most unlikely of places. Ready? It’s the Faculty Club on the Berkeley campus. . . . The interior is somewhere between the Great Hall at Hogwarts and Great Northern Hotel from “Twin Peaks” — antlers above the fireplace, vaulted ceilings and plenty of long wooden tables. In the Kerr dining room, we sat down and shared a thick, juicy burger ($9.95) and a soup-and-salad combo ($11) with club sandwich and Southwestern-style chicken soup.” Check out the menu here.
I personally can recommend the lunch menu at the Women’s Faculty Club. You do need to have a member in your group to dine there, but there are plenty of members at the law school. I, for one, would be happy to take advantage of my membership and go to lunch with anyone who wants to try it! (Lunch is the best part of the day, every day! Just shoot me an email!)(Holly Johnson, in the development office)
